Lecture – Ideas, Craft and Context
After watching the lecture video, I have resonated with Veronica and Venice, as I do go back to simple sketches and then play around with digital design. I also like to do extensive research of what is relatively used in the marketplace (locally, regionally and globally). Having a look at competition is crucial when thinking of out of the box ideas and first time launches. It was interesting to hear Werkflow’s way of ideas and working around game development as there are various artists and designers collaborating for a huge project. This grabbed my attention as I am interested in game design.
Workshop Challenge
Initially before thinking of logos, I started thinking of different names for this elite team. I decided to go with “Unleash 5”. The eSports team usually consists of 5 members or players. As for the five ideas, I thought of having some concepts revolving around patriotism, flag colors or letters and digits.
The first logo idea revolves around the Bahraini Flag seal. A white field on the hoist side separated from a larger red field on the fly by five white triangles in the form of a zigzag pattern. The national flag of Bahrain (Arabic: علم البحرين) consists of a white band on the left, separated from a red area on the right by five triangles that serve as a serrated line. This shows the players being patriotic to their country and are proud to represent Bahrain.
The second logo idea revolves around the Arabian Oryx as it is the national animal of Bahrain. The Arabian oryx or white oryx (Oryx leucoryx) is a medium-sized antelope with a distinct shoulder bump, long, straight horns, and a tufted tail. It is native to desert and steppe areas of the Arabian Peninsula. The Arabian oryx was extinct in the wild by the early 1970s, but was saved in zoos and private preserves, and was reintroduced into the wild starting in 1980. This route involves focusing on the national animal as the hero in the logo.
The third logo idea revolves around another famous bird in the kingdom which is the Saker Falcon. The saker falcon (Falco cherrug) is a large species of falcon. This species breeds from central Europe eastwards across the Palearctic to Manchuria. It is mainly migratory except in the southernmost parts of its range, wintering in Ethiopia, the Arabic peninsula, northern Pakistan and western China. Swift and powerful. It is a symbol of force and courage, recognizing the importance of falconry in the Arab tradition and culture. Falconry is the art of hunting wild prey with trained falcons and hawks. The sport has flourished in the Middle East and Asia for centuries.
The fourth logo idea revolves around the coat of arms of Bahrain. The arms act as a governmental and national symbol in addition to being the personal arms of the king; only the king. However, may display the royal crown ensigning the coat of arms. This is another patriotic route. I might focus on using more of the crown on the logo. The Royal Crown used by the Emirs and King of Bahrain, adds smaller crown head points between the larger ones.
The fifth logo idea revolves around the use of the letter of the team’s name and the digit 5 as the heroes – Unleashed 5. It’s like using an initial and number for the players on their jerseys. It’s very straight forward, but the letters are striking, youthful and funky. After thinking more about this route, I just feel that the team name doesn’t match with the use of animals. So, I might have to tweak it or change it.
